Research abstract

Through the proposed Navy SBIR program, NanoSonic will create novel, highly insulative 3D patterned HybridSil®  thermal array wetsuit fabrics for cold water (35o F) diving that maintain > 75% of their insulative performance at 100’ depth. This will be accomplished by creating a multilayered neoprene wetsuit fabric that affords both 4-way stretch and  empirically down-selected, sealed air gaps supported by hollow HybridSil elastomers with tailored mechanical properties and dimensions to prevent collapse at 100’ depths. Through previous SOCOM SBIR funding, NanoSonic and its Phase III integration partner designed, constructed, and completed multiple successful form, fit, and function (FFF) tests on HybridSil  Diver Armor wetsuits that provided drastically improved laceration, abrasion, and cut resistance over legacy state-of-the-art wetsuits with the Navy Experimental Dive Unit (NEDU). The successful design, evaluation, and prototype framework has been established for the proposed Phase I Navy SBIR program and will integrate NanoSonic’s insulative HybridSil  thermal arrays in addition to its previously tested diver armor fabrics. This compressive resistant yet flexible air gap technology is currently employed in commercially available NFPA 1971 certified structural fire protective gloves and will be specifically tailored for retained dimensional stability and compressive resistance for retained insulation and environmental durability during cold water diving.
