Research abstract

Passenger’s objective is to create an inexpensive, “light weight” F16 flight simulator incorporating our eXtended Reality (XR) headset that will provide 4K resolution, 220 deg field-of-view, continuous depth perception, and high contrast imaging.  The low mass headset will resemble a pair of wrap-around sunglasses.  Our XR technology is designed to deliver hyper-realistic images without inducing conventional VR motion sickness.  During this development phase, we will use a modified conventional headset to validate our simulator software models while concurrently perfecting our bench-top MEMS optics.  Upon final optical verification, we will fabricate and test the required components for our next generation XR Light Engine with the assistance of our MEMS foundry partners. The simulator structure will consist of a precision scaled, 3D printed cockpit equipped with authentic flight controls, tactile buttons, switches, levers and knobs.  Green screen boundaries will occupy all instrument and canopy locations.  Outward looking headset cameras will capture real-time images of the Pilot’s body movements and cockpit environment.  With the offered assistance of DoD software developers, we will use combat correct F16C flight characteristics and XR green screen overlays to deliver a fully immersive training environment.  The simulator will be portable, scalable, and configured for rapid deployment.
