Research abstract

Bloodstone objectives are to develop mitigating technologies to reduce the risk of hypothermia, vibration, blood loss, and pressure wounds during air transportation of the injured war fighter. Hypothermia mitigation- Introduction of this lightweight air-filled mattress has already been shown through research to improve on the perfonnance of cun-ently hypothennia systems. The Xtract® Insulate Air Mattress achieves this by providing a water impenneable, insulation barrier between the casualty and the cold surface that the casualty is laid on. Vibration Mitigation - The Xtract® Insulate Air Mattress reduces the magnitude of vibration passed through the mattress to a casualty. Pressure lnju1y Reduction- The Xtract® Insulate Air Mattress distributes the casualty's weight more evenly due to the design, that conforms to the patient. By distributing the casualty's weight the pressure on any one area is reduced. The design allows air to flow more easily which reduces moisture build up which has been shown to be a key contributor to the development of pressure injury.
