Research abstract

Electronic warfare (EW) is becoming more of a concern for the US and our allies as we face more sophisticated adversaries. While, significant progress has been made in GPS denied position, navigation, and timing (PNT) over the last few years, the solutions don’t take full advantage of multidomain operations to support delivery of reliable PNT for extended periods when GPS is jammed or spoofed. Using radio frequency (RF) signals for ranging to support collaborative navigation and time transfer would enable PNT advantaged platforms (with access to military satellite, stable high-performance clocks, and/or high-end inertial systems) to provide time and position references to platforms in a GPS denied area. TRX has partnered with L3Harris in developing a system of systems approach to providing EW resilient ranging and time transfer.  Our proposed hybrid approach allows us to both deliver an accurate and resilient PNT collaboration over very large distances and to meet the SWaP-C needs of the dismount warfighter.  The technology being developed will enable DOD-wide collaborative navigation between manned/unmanned platforms and warfighters. Platforms with access to uncompromised GNSS signals (or simply high quality PNT systems) will be able to share that PNT information over long distances, using ranging and time transfer, to improve PNT assurance for warfighters in contested environments. By adding these capabilities to tactical radios, the Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) burden is only marginally increased. The developed capability will be able to provide ranging and timing inputs to Army PM PNT’s mounted and dismounted Assured PNT systems as well as into fires platforms that require accurate PNT information.  Interfaces will be specified that allow for direct integration to the developed capability.
