Research abstract

Envistacom, LLC provides this proposal to research the general problem of radio transmission in a plasma and to propose viable strategies (frequencies, antenna topologies, waveforms, etc) to successfully communicate in a plasma environment. The outcome of the study will be to identify an antenna and system architecture that operates effectively during the entirety of the flight of the HGB, even in the presence of plasma. The proposed solution will address critical criteria, such as SWaP, environmentals, and overall RF performance. The proposed solution will build on the wide body of research being performed relative to Electronically Steerable Array (ESA) antennas and radio frequency propagation in a plasma environment to meet the HGB missions with the lowest SWaP and highest performance. The primary focus of this effort will to first thoroughly understand the nature of the problem, then to propose a general solution that can be used as the basis for future products and development. The solution will be capable of interoperating with multiple waveforms, modems, etc to provide connectivity, and possibly to enhance capabilities for systems such as GPS. The combined technology provides a pathway to a common communications infrastructure for any waveform, frequency, and communications path as a software-configurable solution with no moving parts.
