Research abstract

B-1B flight line technical content management has not kept pace with technological advancements. Considering the B-1B is one of the most complex aviation platforms, there is an alarming lack of technology applied to support flight line maintainers tasked with keeping platforms operational. This is especially true with their access to Technical Orders (TO), which are manuals with step-by-step maintenance instructions. TO content management, navigation, and delivery arguably has barely advanced past the early days of the B-1. TO’s are hosted on laptops and tablets that require maintainers to continually manage the hardware in tight spaces and irregular surfaces. This negatively impacts operational maintenance in terms of cost, time, and consistency. To address these issues, Securboration proposes to extend our Augmented Reality system, called ARTEA, to enhance the B-1B technical data environment. ARTEA provides maintainers intimate access to technical data while in the performance of critical aircraft maintenance. ARTEA brings digital capabilities to the maintainer/warfighter in a small footprint, concise, easy to use Smart Glass device that frees the maintainer/warfighter’s hands when executing maintenance on highly complex aircraft. ARTEA provides an important capability for the USAF as it transitions to a purely digital engineering acquisition and sustainment lifecycle.
