Research abstract

The AeroDefense drone and pilot (controller) detection, location and alert system operates on a physical signal level. The system scans 400/900 MHz and 2.4/5.8 GHz for Radio Frequency (RF) signals with similar power, frequency-hop and other physical characteristics to those used by drones and their ground station controllers. If the drone signature is in the AeroDefense system database, manufacturer/model information will be included in alerts. If the signature is not in the database, the system identifies the signal as an unidentified drone type. Multiple, networked sensors work together to trilaterate the signal location via Power of Arrival (POA) technique. A single sensor can provide a proximity and range alert. A single-sensor mounted on a vehicle can connect to a fixed network or other mobile sensors to dynamically shift the drone detection and alert zone. Limited technical risk exists because non-DOD customers purchased and deployed AeroDefense fixed detection systems over the past eighteen (18) months. Determination of AF-end user alert capabilities, dynamic network connectivity and military spec ruggedization and Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) reduction comprise the key tasks. Proposed products include: 1) man-portable 2) portable-rapid deploy and 3) vehicle-mounted. Alert and detection information can be integrated with other command systems.
