Research abstract

At Steampunk, we have brought together proven commercial tools, techniques, and processes to establish an integrated DevSecOps-driven Modernization Framework that delivers high-value mission solutions to the Government faster and with better results in terms of user acceptance and adoption. Our framework includes DevSecOps tools and processes, mature infrastructure packaging and deployment like Kubernetes container orchestration, Lean programming, Agile, and Human-Centered Design (HCD) methods. We call this framework Steampunk Design Intelligence™ (DI™), and we will employ it in our overall approach to performing work for the United States Air Force (USAF). Combining our DITM approach with a focus on blending best-in-class techniques will allow us to deliver high-quality user features at an accelerated rate. Steampunk is proposing services where we will pilot and scale our Design Intelligence framework for USAF in support of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Open Topic. DevSecOps with Kubernetes, Agile, and HCD are key ingredients in our Design Intelligence framework and Steampunk believes they are especially appropriate for immediate delivery on USAF programs. When integrated, this set of activities and methods becomes a fluid operations model that engages the right stakeholders and deploys innovative design and DevSecOps practices The overarching objective for the Phase I effort is to develop a plan for testing the realism of our DI™ framework while developing and deploying a specific USAF mission or administrative application feature. By the end of the Phase I period, we will be prepared to start deploying the framework and an actual working solution/demo, using a containerized deployment approach. The goal for this program would be to introduce our more efficient, integrated framework, and assuming an agreed upon plan in Phase I, implement it to support application modernization across a target JPO program. The immediate result would be functioning applications that can be deployed into production quickly using the combination of efficient stakeholder engagement and containerized microservices development. For programs like the F‑35, the intricacies of the solution demand consistency, quality, and performance – which our Design Intelligence framework and containerized deployment produce.
