Research abstract

As the U.S. Air Force’s and Navy training becomes more technical and complex there exists tremendous opportunity to improve the learning environment while decreasing the anxiety and stresses of preparing and taking formal knowledge and proficiency exams. The Air Force and Navy require an innovative, intelligent, rapid, and blended micro-learning tool to strengthen and advance the Continuum of Learning initiatives. Such a tool – Texting Educational Data – Rapid Knowledge Transfer and Assessment (TED-RKTA), provided by short message service (SMS, i.e., text messages) rapidly transfers knowledge, prepare learners and assess knowledge decay. TED-RKTA equips Airmen and Sailors with a blended micro-learning and smart phone technology that is a comfortable environment that modern learners are already fluent in. This creates an innovative, continuous low stress learning environment that supports rapid knowledge transfer and assessment at the point of impact in the learner’s hand, any time and any place. Additionally, the analysis of the learner’s responses immediately informs the instructor of knowledge gaps that need reinforcement prior to conducting live or simulated exercises or prior to continuing to the next learning event.
