Research abstract

The complex nature of the phase evolution and interactions in high entropy alloys (HEAs) produced through additive manufacturing is an area of great interest due to potential applications in high strength and oxidative resistance applications at high temperatures, but currently there exists little scientific understanding or quantification. Without a complete scientific understanding of the phase interactions, use is limited in these areas. In this proposal MRL is an ideal position to begin the complicated process of fully quantifying and understanding the phase interactions and oxidative behavior of these materials. Through MRL’s development and expertise in ICME based digital twin, processing parameters and microstructure can be linked to material properties. University of North Texas will leverage its knowledge in the microstructural characterization and phase evolution in HEAs using CALPHAD modeling and state of the art characterization techniques. Tosoh’s proven ability to produce HEA powder will be used for material for additive manufacturing. Together, the team will take HEA powder through the process of additive manufacturing, calibration into iCAAM and finally oxidative studies to link oxidation behavior to process parameters for a full understanding and predictive ability to enable implementation of wide spread use of these materials in multiple applications.
