Research abstract

Development of transparent armor for military requires not only ballistic protection, but durability due to extreme environments. Current transparent armor lasting less than 3-4 years, and is causing a major problem in sustainment requirements. This SBIR proposes the development of extended life through combination of material science and computer-based modeling. 1.     Develop understanding of main mechanisms that cause delamination in transparent armor2.     Input material properties and delamination mechanisms into a developed life prediction model3.     Utilize model to identify key materials and processes that increase durability4.     Develop transparent armor technologies that increase life beyond 5 years.5.     Utilize model to support development of a ‘Best Value’ procurement methodThen, after successfully completing these objectives, JNI Armor will then transition the procurement specification and transparent armor technologies to fielded and production platforms.
