Research abstract
The proliferation of man-made vertical obstructions (VOs) poses a critical and evolving threat to the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and its interests, particularly as near-peer adversaries such as Russia, China, and Iran exploit these hazards to degrade American airpower and operational agility. In regions like the Indo-Pacific, adversaries rapidly construct dense networks of communication towers, power lines, and other infrastructure, creating complex, undocumented obstacle environments that significantly increase the risk to low-flying aircraft. These adversaries understand that the U.S. currently relies on outdated, labor-intensive processes for VO detection—processes that can take months to produce actionable data, leaving American forces vulnerable to surprise, collision, and mission failure. The consequences of this capability gap are stark: in September 2023, an Army AH-64E Apache helicopter crashed into high-voltage transmission lines in Washington state, resulting in injuries, a destroyed $13 million aircraft, and a wildfire, all of which could have been prevented with timely, accurate VO data. The Department of Defense’s current planning cycle for VO identification often takes 4–6 months, a delay that adversaries can—and do—exploit to their advantage, particularly in urbanized or rapidly changing environments where VOs are constantly evolving. Foundation Stack AI, Inc. directly addresses this urgent operational challenge with its innovative GlobalVO™ platform, a breakthrough solution that leverages advanced artificial intelligence and human-machine teaming (HMT) to automate the detection, extraction, and management of VOs worldwide. Unlike traditional methods, GlobalVO™ can scan and identify obstructions as small as 20 feet tall across entire countries in just hours, reducing time to detection by 99.99% and operating at speeds 8,000 times faster than manual workflows. The platform’s 90%+ accuracy rate and automated refresh capabilities ensure that military planners, aviation teams, and drone operators receive the most current and comprehensive VO data available, dramatically enhancing situational awareness and mission safety. This technology has already delivered quantifiable value to both defense and commercial customers: for example, in support of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), GlobalVO™ identified approximately 110,000 VO features across a 20,341 km˛ area in Sudan in just 30 minutes—a task that would have required nearly a year of human analyst effort using legacy systems. Foundation Stack AI’s solution is not only revolutionizing military mission planning but also providing transformative value to commercial aviation, UAS route planning, and infrastructure mapping, establishing a new standard for speed, accuracy, and operational impact in the VO data domain.
