Research abstract

We at M&J Engineering, P.C. (M&J has been a certified SBA 8A firm since April 2015) along with our partner, Thornton Tomasetti – Weidlinger Applied Science, propose to develop and implement a full design of a documented workflow and model review process for hull strength assessment. It includes a software implementation of analytical tools (MARQUS) to assess FEM inputs and outputs in a standardized manner, and advanced development of analytical methods for assessment of FE modeling. Validation of the workflow and software for realistic structures will occur in Phase II, using test data from GFI, new tests, or the open literature. Extensions of MARQUS pertinent to other critical FEM simulation workflows, particularly acoustics and underwater explosions (UNDEX), will be examined in Phase II. The efforts and developments successfully completed in Phase I led to follow-on tasks for Phase II that can be categorized into the following four major areas of focus: (1) draft written guidelines, (2) software development, (3) verification of design tool functionality, and (4) design tool initial validation. Each of these thrust areas are discussed in the proposal, along with details of how they support the primary technical objective of Phase II.
