Research abstract

Agencies throughout the US Government face increasing threats to their missions from foreign malign influences (FMI) operating within the broader information environment. Misinformation spreads easily and can be extremely difficult to root out and counter. A key mechanism for countering misleading narratives is to prevent an information vacuum from forming around an agencyĺs goals, policies, or activities. This requires that agency personnel be prepared to emphasize positive, transparent, and factual messages within diverse information communities, particularly through social media platforms with large reach. Novel training solutions are needed to both engage and effectively train personnel to recognize and address threats from FMIs. These training solutions must readily adapt and incorporate evolving threat and resource environments. Charles River Analytics proposes to design an FMI AI-driven Challenge Environment eXperiential Simulation (FACE-X). FACE-X is an immersive training environment driven by generative AI for social media interactions that enables trainers to design and trainees to experience adaptive challenges from simulated FMIs that keep pace with the evolution of the threat landscape. FACE-X enables immersive, accurate, and memorable training on key information resilience strategies and tactics.á
