Research abstract

The goal of the proposed project is to extend the capabilities of Kin-X, a novel software system to generate both rapid and deep intelligence from a wide variety of DNA types by inferring distant kinship relationships between individuals and reconstructing familial pedigrees. Whereas Kin-X currently supports human identification from purely genetic comparisons, this project provides support for additional data types including integration of phenotype analysis. The addition of analysis tools for long read sequencing data will also enable the use of portable long reads sequencers in a forward deployed scenario. The existing kinship and pedigree reconstruction tools will be extended to allow DNA comparisons between SNP and STR profiles and add support for complex relationships. Enhancements to genetic genealogy tools, including non-genetic data storage and an LLM interface, will streamline analyst efficiency. These advancements aim to provide the DoD with scalable BIOINT capabilities crucial for addressing modern defense challenges.
