Research abstract

In Phase I, CFDRC has successfully accomplished the development of a DoD open-source geometry kernel based on an advanced NURBS fitting procedure, a Bézier curve method, and a subdivision surface procedure to recover and to retain the boundary geometry. We have also developed and demonstrated APIs to allow the geometry kernel to interoperate with other simulation frameworks to enable accurate predictions including adaptive mesh refinement near curved boundaries, aeroelasticity, dynamic simulations with body movement, and high-order mesh generation. The objectives of Phase II are to demonstrate the feasibility of providing a robust and feature-rich geometry kernel appropriate for incorporation into larger DoD developed tools and frameworks, and a versatile set of APIs to efficiently perform commonly required tasks related to geometry and associated computational meshes. The Phase II effort will focus on: a) fully developing the geometry kernel and verifying the curved surface reconstruction for a wider range of problems; b) incorporating the geometry kernel into the HPCMPO-CREATETM-AV Kestrel code to generate high-order meshes for COFFE; c) accessing the underlying geometry for constrained surface mesh movement for mesh manipulation, adaptation and smoothing tools such as MeshGrind; and d) coupling the geometry kernel to KCFD/SAMAir for adaptive mesh refinement.
