Research abstract

Innovation within the intelligence collection function has not kept pace with advances made in the private sector. Natural language processing (NLP) and information correlation algorithms available on today’s consumer-facing platforms are superior to tools that fusion intelligence analysts must use to navigate classified information systems and identify emerging threats to the warfighter. An Open Search Architecture Platform (OSAP) has the potential to create an exponential force multiplier for intelligence analysts by automatically identifying geospatial, temporal and contextual connections between data and alerting the analyst to any activity that is potentially relevant to their problem set. The OSAP uses existing ranking algorithms to ‘score’ information and provide recommendations for an analyst’s review, while reducing the time required to discover and correlate mission-essential intelligence. The process is similar to how today’s consumer-facing platforms alert users when an event of interest (e.g. reduced prices on a desired consumer good, tickets available to sporting events) becomes known. Deployment of an OSAP across both classified and open-source collection platforms may allow analysts to more quickly correlate information and identify emerging activity that is relevant to the force.
