Research abstract

Helios Remote Sensing Systems, Inc., supported by SRC, Inc., will investigate novel signal processing techniques that can be implemented on existing radars that will provide improvements in probability of detection at longer ranges and not impact current scan time requirements.During Phase I, the Helios Team will conduct a feasibility study on possible signal processing techniques. This study will include a report with analysis using laboratory simulation tools such as MATLAB, a test plan, and test results. The study and analysis will evaluate techniques to refocus the measured data, combined with modern tracking algorithms, along with spatial clutter processing improvements to minimize clutter contamination. We will investigate how these algorithms would be implemented and used in a real world environment with metrics showing potential improvement.During Phase II, the Helios Team will evaluate the techniques and ensure that they are matured and implemented in a realistic simulation environment, such as a high-fidelity radar modeling tool. The algorithms will be matured to a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 5 or above with the possibility of integration into a government-owned System Integration Lab (SIL). At the end of Phase II, the algorithms and techniques will be able to transition into a Science and Technology (S&T) program.
