Research abstract

The sequential Phase II effort will modify, evaluate and demonstrate the performance of innovative continuous High Pulse Repetition Frequency (HPRF) radar waveforms and processing techniques for the airborne detection and geolocation of anti-aircraft rounds and commercial drone threats. Technology Service Corporation (TSC) will perform the effort using analytical methods, modeling and simulation, hardware bench testing and airborne radar data collections. In Phase I, several promising Continuous HPRF techniques were successfully demonstrated using a ground-based radar testbed against airborne targets of opportunity and a Phase II effort for the long range detection of fighter aircraft using forward looking airborne radars is underway. In performing the sequential Phase II effort, TSC will further refine the continuous HPRF techniques and demonstrate them in both simulated and measured air-to-air scenarios with commercial drones and surrogate anti-aircraft (AA) rounds. TSC will implement representative HPRF radar waveforms in an AFRL-directed airborne surveillance radar testbed and collect air-to-air data against controlled targets. The primary application is wide-area radar surveillance to detect, locate and track low RCS fixed wing and rotary wing drones and AA rounds at tactical distances. TSC will identify operational surveillance radars that are compatible with the developed continuous HPRF waveforms for operational transition.
