Research abstract

Optimization of the mechanical properties of additively manufactured metallic material often requires a combination of hot isostatic pressing and/or post-build heat treatments to achieve the desired combination of static, dynamic, and other properties. Microstructure evolution during such treatments has a dramatic effect on the final properties. The role of defects present from the additive manufacturing process is also a crucial consideration, particularly for dynamic properties. In this program, MRL proposes to use an Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach to understand microstructure evolution during post-build HIP and heat treatment and predict the resultant mechanical properties. This approach will enable designers to select the best post-processing treatments to achieve desired static and/or dynamic properties
