Research abstract

UES has developed a suite of ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) materials, produced using their novel “Top Downâ€Â process, that display an unusually attractive balance of properties, that include high strength/toughness and good oxidation/erosion resistance. These materials are very attractive for use in extreme environments, where high temperature resistance (>3400 °C [>6000°F]), with minimal (or no) ablation/erosion, are key requirements. The goal of this Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Technology Transition Plan (STTP) is to scale up the powder processing of UES’ UHTC materials, enabling their transition into commercialization. Nozzles and leading edges (LE) of various sizes will be produced from this powder using near net shaped manufacturing by field assisted sintering technology (NNSM-FAST). The performance of these components will be evaluated under actual hot test firings by a strong alliance with a major rocket manufacturer (NGIS) and original equipment manufacturer (Boeing). UES will also fabricate and deliver large (6â€Â) nozzle(s) and LE components under this program; however, full scale testing is beyond the scope of this program. UES will refine any necessary processes for commercial production and will discuss the commercialization road map for Phase III with the Air Force Program Manager and key stakeholders.
