Research abstract
The purpose of this project is to: (a) conduct targeted research to document the scientific basis for mitigating EMI/EMP hazards to important engineering systems; and (b) create an engineering toolkit and develop a methodology to deploy the needed solutions. The methodology to be created will identify and prioritize vulnerabilities of electronic components sensitive to EMI/EMP. Emphasis is placed on characterizing emerging protection materials and developing strategies for their deployment. This includes development of protective shielding concepts for components in a range of civilian and military systems and munitions. Examples of such systems include Autonomous Electric Vehicles and Unmanned Aerial Systems for multiple industrial applications, including defense, infrastructure, and telecommunications sectors. Mathematical models of the hazards representing conventional EMI/EMP sources will be developed such as to enable more comprehensive analysis of possible EMI/EMP sources and their interactions. Deployment of these tools will ultimately improve current abilities to mitigate risk and manage assets with respect to EMI/EMP interactions with sensitive electronic components. Products of this research will include: (a) documentation of the scientific and engineering approaches involved with EMI/EMP impact to sensitive systems; and (b) new analytical approaches to improve the diagnosis of hazards and implementation of solutions in mitigating EMI/EMP risks.
