Research abstract

The Navy has a need for a transportable, ground-based laser target board to characterize military laser performance at operational ranges in an outdoor environment. Current laser target boards that measure laser power, divergence, and pointing accuracy are not rapidly deployable and easily transported throughout open-air military ranges. Technology Service Corporation (TSC) will leverage its twenty-plus years of experience in developing and fielding infrared test equipment used at open-air ranges for Test & Evaluation (T&E) of Missile Warning and Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) systems to develop the Laser Target (LTB) system. TSC will use an array of multi-channel detector boxes based on technology employed in the Infrared Simulator and Target Array (ISTAR) system at NAWCWD (previously developed by TSC), and a reflective screen viewed by an IR camera. Under the Phase II Base program, TSC will complete a detailed system design, then build, test, and demonstrate a proof-of-concept system that will provide the Navy with an initial LTB capability. Under the Phase II Option program, the LTB system capability will be further developed with a rotatable platform to mount the detector boxes and the reflective screen. The additional capability will be demonstrated at the end of the Option program.
