Research abstract

Pison Technology has developed a wrist-wearable neuromuscular sensing system which enables hands-free, gesture-based control for electronic devices. Our hardware prototype units are ready to be integrated into solutions for communication and computer interaction. A need has been identified to allow warfighters to send/receive messages in the battlefield (multi-domain), in proximity and across distances, especially for conditions in which: 1) line of sight is limited, 2) the environment is noisy, 3) weapon grasp is required, or 4) covert status is needed. In these cases, standard means for signaling (by voice commands or visible hand-signals), compromise the battlefield signature. We propose an innovative solution, which allows wearers of a Pison device to send messages (using gestures of the wrist and fingers) which are translated into wirelessly-transmitted messages, received as haptic signals at the wrist of a remote warfighter (also wearing a Pison device). As a first aim, we will define requirements for a custom gesture and haptic-notification set, with customers. Second, we will deliver a cloud software system capable of sending/receiving messages to Pison devices worn by two software-defined parties. In a final aim, we will conduct field test, on site, with at least two customers, to demonstrate usability with live operators.
