Research abstract

Janis Research Company LLC proposes to develop an ultra-low temperature system with operation temperatures below 0.4 Kelvin and sample measurement capabilities for application of a high voltage up to 5kV. Upon further integration with an external magnetic field, this will be a unique ultra-low temperature platform to investigate the phases of multi-ferroic quantum materials and materials near a quantum critical point In Phase I, Janis Research Company LLC will develop high electric field capability for a detachable sample loader which will mount into a dry 3He cryostat. The cryostat will be using a closed cycle pulse tube cryo- cooler for condensing of the 3He gas which is confined in an internal circuit. Instead of fully warming up and venting the system to mount each sample, the cryostat will be in idle state during sample exchange. The sample will be mounted onto the loader which is decoupled from the cryostat, then slowly introduced through a gate valve. After full insertion of the sample loader and proper precooling is achieved through thermal contact and exchange gas, the cryostat will run in 3He condensing mode to further cool down the sample to base temperature of below 0.4 K.
