Research abstract

Skyhaven Systems, LLC proposes to develop a new proton conducting membrane for use with carbon-based fuel photoelectrochemical (PEC) generation systems. A cost-effective alternative to current membrane materials that reduces the permeability of various by-products for improved efficiency and safety is sought. Skyhaven proposes to address these requirements by developing a composite membrane based upon sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)[SPEEK] and an inorganic clay nanomaterial. During the Phase I effort Skyhaven will fabricate and characterize membranes with varying composition and processing conditions to optimize reduction of several different potential hydrocarbon products including methanol, methane, ethylene, butylene, and acetic acid, maximize ionic conductivity, and improve mechanical stability. A significant reduction in crossover is expected when compared to Nafion. A preliminary manufacturing cost will be estimated and a cost model produced. Currently PEC systems are found desirable as portable fueling systems for hydrogen fuel cell applications but are still widely considered in the early development stage. As technological improvements are made that increase efficiency and lower cost, PEC customers will develop particularly from 1.) Fuel cell companies producing portable consumer electronics, 2.) Off-grid military and public facilities subsidized by the government, and 3.) Small fueling stations and power stations for remote locations and communities. Longer term interest from large scale chemical companies is expected as generation of commodity chemicals, energy production, and carbon dioxide reduction/remediation will become increasingly important.
