Research abstract

The primary technical objective of this Phase II proposal is to define a SATCOM waveform and related functional and performance requirements based on the ETSI DVB-S2 standard supporting configurable and variable bi-directional satellite data communications, implement the waveform and related functions on a modem hardware platform, and demonstrate functionality initially in a laboratory setting. The waveform definition is intended to support a selection of modulation and coding configurations (MODCODs) covering a range of occupied bandwidths (i.e., symbol rates), modulation types and forward error correction coding rates to allow for maximizing link capacities over a large range of propagation losses. The implementation will include variable switching between MODCODs to allow for continuous optimization of link performance in the presence of time-varying signal propagation conditions.
