Research abstract

The VRR team – VRR, Inc., Old Dominion University, and Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems – developed technology for an aircraft carrier’s Landing Signals Officer (LSO) to press augmented reality reconfigurable buttons and receive positive feedback through haptic, tactile, and other positive indications. Using a three-pronged approach of Requirements-Pull, Science-Push, and Technology-Push, VRR is robustly evolving our Wearable Augmented Reality Controls (WARC) innovations for LSO requirements. Successful prototypes of our WARC technologies are configured as peripheral devices that can be easily integrated into the existing LSO Display Systems (LSODS); as well as, supporting integrations with LSO training systems (existing and new emerging training systems such as Aircraft Carrier Environment Simulator (ACES)). As a modular add-on option to existing LSODS legacy buttons, VRR’s WARC solutions focus on semi-transparent augmented reality buttons that appear attached to the LSO’s forearm, plus options for and LSODS screens hovering in space just above/below the LSO’s forearm. WARC buttons can serve multiple functions depending on the mode selected. Modes can exactly mirror current LSODS configurations, plus support new types of 2D/2.5/3D configurations with visualizations that are more intuitive, less text intensive, and reduce the number of layers/selections needed. Our WARC solutions utilize a COTS ruggedized
