Research abstract

Visualization of complex 3D battlespace in 2D hinders the warfighter’s ability to rapidly make critical and effective decisions. Resolving depth within a scene improves our spatial understanding and dramatically reduces the cognitive burden associated with situational analysis. A light-field display (LfD) projects perspective correct 3D aerial imagery visible to the unaided eye with the expected visual depth cues such as binocular disparity, occlusion, specular highlights, and gradient shading to all users within the projection volume. Building upon FoVI3D’s proven LfD architecture, this effort will advance the display’s visualization capability to include full color, increase usable depth, and increase spatial resolution. Integrating FoVI3D’s ObjGL API and the multi-view processing pipeline will reduce the size, weight, and power consumption as well as the bandwidth required for rendering dynamic 3D data. A companion tablet device interface will enable user control and interaction with the LfD. FoVI3D’s developed Field of Light Display Metrology System will provide metrics for the display’s projection characteristics. The resulting display will be a scalable visualization system for single and multi-viewer use in air, space, and cyberspace operation centers. The integration of the LfD will reduce the cognitive load and increase collaboration enabling rapid decision making with greater confidence.
