Research abstract

Modern adversaries are gaining proficiency at forging cyber attacks against cyber networks in the United States. The threat is particularly salient for our militarys strategic systems, such as the Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) and Nuclear Command and Control at the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AF NWC), which often depend on networked technologies or embedded systems that may be vulnerable to attack. Augmenting our cyber defenses with game-theoretic tools that identify cyber vulnerabilities to AF NWC strategic systems and quantify the effects can enable cyber defenders to increase the resilience of our network infrastructure and security of critical weapons systems. These tools can also augment cyber vulnerability analysis in other networked systems. To address these requirements, Charles River Analytics proposes the design and demonstration of a tool for Game-Theoretic Reasoning and Analysis of VulnerabilITY (GRAVITY). GRAVITY is a game-theoretic analysis platform that executes rich models of adversary and defender behaviors on a probabilistic representation of network interactions, enabling exploration, visualization, and prioritization of cyber vulnerabilities and their potential impact on strategic weapons missions.
