Research abstract

Q-Peak is currently developing a free space optical connector for high power MWIR (Mid-wave infrared) applications. In Phase I, Q-Peak was able to demonstrate mounting of chalcogenide fiber using a novel chalcogenide-based glass frit solder with minimal impact to transmitted power, and developed novel processes for applying this material to the bonded interface. In Phase II, Q-Peak will leverage its extensive free space optical connector design experience to develop a novel high power optical connector for common Mid-Wave Infrared fibers which is mechanically robust. Q-Peak will demonstrate an integrated fiber collimator/mode stripper. By leveraging a teaming agreement with NRL, Q-Peak will then demonstrate epoxy-free mounting of the fiber collimator assembly within a CTE-matched ferrule using a proprietary ultra-low Tg frit glass solder. In Phase II, Q-Peak will also work with NRL to concurrently develop a process for applying nanostructured (“Motheye”) AR coatings to the fiber collimator assembly. Finally, Q-Peak will leverage its extensive mechanical design talent to design a connector housing and mating interface which is robust against MIL-STD-810G environmental testing criteria through many mate-demate cycles.
