Research abstract

Situational awareness for small tactical units is a driving imperative for Force Protection and mission success. Legacy technology has fallen short in giving the warfighter small, lightweight and easy to use Unattended Ground Sensor systems to aid in the awareness of activities that could pose a threat or allow him to better complete his mission. New generation Digital Signal Processors, miniaturized sensors, and ultra-low power secure communication modules now permit development of a much improved and reliable sensor system. Integration with smart phones and tablets is now possible giving a more rapid, intuitive and improved user experience to know what is around him in one glance. Ultra-low power processing now makes advanced signal processing at the embedded sensor node level. Implementation of these techniques increases probability of detection while reducing false and nuisance alarms. As well, these advanced techniques can now be powered by coin sized batteries making it possible to develop a very small lightweight and easy to employ sensor node.
