Research abstract

We suggest a miniaturized survey system with significant reductions in size/weight while delivering same or better performance to the current IPAD system. The current system’s weight/volume is 135 lb./6300 inch^3 and the core Navigational Module (INS) is based on large and heavy Ring Laser Gyros with weight/volume of >50 lb./1200 inch^3. We intend replacing the above Inertial Sensor Assembly (ISA) with a new, smaller and lighter ISA utilizing a new generation of advanced Fiber Optics Gyro (FOG) and reduce the auxiliary components' weight. FOG is proven to meet the stringent requirements of various applications, including Land and Marine. Our approach relies on innovative FOG design, smaller in volume compared to existing FOG sensors with improved performance; Use of novel architecture for the three axis gyro cluster; and implementation of advanced Navigation processing for better error rejection. The projected weight of the fully integrated INS similar in functionality to the current system and delivering the IPADS performance is 14 lb. and the volume is < 320 inch^3; the complete IPADS system is project to weigh < 40 lb.
