Research abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY Despite rapid transport to appropriate facilitiesmany trauma patients needlessly die in the first hour of careTrauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age ofand greatest cause of potential life years lost before the age ofexceeding that of either cancer or heart diseaseUp toof traumatic deaths may be preventableIt is estimated that miscommunication is the leading attributable cause during the first phase of careThis communication stems from the complex nature of the trauma resuscitation environmentPresentlynearly all trauma centers in the USuse a paper trauma flowsheetData capture is difficult due to the sheer volume of information transmittedfragmented in presentationand the information does not flow concurrently to the treatment teamCurrent electronic health records do not support rapid input of dataand in factare known to slow many processesWe have developed a prototype electronic platform coupled to a situation awareness monitor that integrates seamlessly into current resuscitation workflows with the potential to aid in rapid decision supportThe goal of this project is to maximize usabilitycomplete automation and reliability of vital sign captureand optimize the situation awareness monitor through iterative stakeholder testing and programming to augment clinical decision supportThis device has the potential to greatly improve resuscitation effectiveness and safety through efficient and accurate data captureThis will positively impact patient outcomes through improved situation awareness and faster intervention PROJECT NARRATIVETrauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age ofIt is estimated that nearlyof deaths may be prevented with optimal careTeam leadership is critical for optimal care and methods that improve leadership and team awareness positively impact outcomesWe have developed a prototype mobile electronic data capture platform to improve communicationprovide situation awareness and support rapid decision supportmaking trauma care safer
