Research abstract

Traditional spectrum access protocols statically assign resources in a given area of operation, often ignoring dynamic conditions, including interference, propagation impairments, security threats, and energy availability at network devices. The ability to adapt to these factors is critical in tactical networking, given the scarcity of spectrum and the use of battery-powered tactical radios. Therefore, energy aware spectrum allocation protocols are needed to support network-centric mission success. To address this need, we propose to design and implement EARN (Energy Aware Radio Networking) for Energy Efficient Tactical Communications. EARN uses several deep learning techniques to optimize spectrum access and data transmission, taking into account the energy availability and the performance demands in the network. EARN will enable flexibility in spectrum allocation, adaptability to new communication conditions, and intelligent mechanisms to optimize network performance while accounting for energy limitations in battery-powered devices. The provided software solution will address both battery management and energy-aware spectrum access. EARN will enable new functionalities in military and commercial networks, having significant impact on network performance, and enormous potential for commercialization.
