Research abstract

The DA-ASAT Detection and Classification System aims to develop a real-time, automated solution to identify, classify, and mitigate threats posed by Direct Ascent Anti-Satellite (DA-ASAT) weapons. The program’s primary objective is to enhance space situational awareness (SSA) for the United States Space Force (USSF) and Space Systems Command (SSC) by providing real-time detection, probabilistic classification, and risk assessment of DA-ASAT launch events. The system focuses on identifying potential DA-ASAT threats through the analysis of global launch activities, predicting potential impacts, and generating early warnings based on pre-launch indicators detected via satellite imagery. The project involves developing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV) models to monitor, analyze, and classify launch events. TerraScope platform leverages CV models to process satellite imagery from sources such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical (EO) sensors to detect pre-launch activities. Wayfinder platform tracks orbital data in real-time, classifying DA-ASAT threats by analyzing missile trajectories, velocities, and flight dynamics. The system integrates multiple data sources, including satellite telemetry, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and commercial satellite tracking services, ensuring comprehensive space coverage.A key component of the system is its multi-source data fusion engine, which consolidates data from various sources to enhance situational awareness. The project also includes the development of an open API for seamless integration with existing USSF and SSC tools, allowing for real-time data sharing and automated threat alerts. The system is built on a modular architecture, providing the flexibility to integrate additional models, such as Maximum Entropy Minimal Surprisal (MEMS), to enhance threat prediction and detection capabilities. The DA-ASAT system reduces the reliance on manual detection methods, increases operational efficiency, and provides more accurate, real-time assessments of DA-ASAT threats.
