Research abstract
The Responsible Space Behavior Detection and Classification project develops an advanced software platform that detects, classifies, and evaluates space-related activities in real time. The program's objective is to enhance space situational awareness (SSA) by identifying potentially hostile or irresponsible behaviors, providing key insights for stakeholders like the United States Space Force (USSF) and Space Systems Command (SSC). The platform integrates AI-driven algorithms with multi-source data fusion to monitor space objects and behaviors effectively. It leverages telemetry, sensor data, and open-source intelligence from systems such as Wayfinder, ASTRIAGraph, and TerraScope to detect unusual activities and classify them based on predefined patterns, such as benign, irresponsible, or hostile behaviors. The effort focuses on developing several key components: real-time data ingestion and fusion capabilities, an AI-based anomaly detection module, and a threat quantification system. These components work together to provide a comprehensive platform that not only monitors space activities but also assesses the intent, opportunity, and capability of space operators to engage in harmful actions. The system includes a threat scoring mechanism that prioritizes responses based on the level of risk posed by specific space behaviors. The platform integrates seamlessly with existing USSF and SSC operational toolchains, ensuring compliance with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and EAR (Export Administration Regulations). Real-time alert and notification features provide operators with immediate insights and guidance on potential threats or anomalous activities. The outcome is a robust, automated system that improves decision-making, reduces operational risks, and enhances the ability to maintain the safety and security of space assets.
