Research abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY ABSTRACTMultifunctional antibody therapy for acute myocardial infarction Patients with acute coronary syndromeACSsuffer from a range of acute myocardial ischemic statesThrombolysis and percutaneous interventionPCIare used to reperfuse the ischemic tissue and stabilize damage caused by infarctionAfter acute myocardial infarctionAMIischemic tissues undergo cell death from necrosis and apoptosisfollowed by inflammation and a process of granulation leading to scar tissue formationThe goal of this project is to minimize the level of cell death that occurs immediately after reperfusion and to rapidly restore damaged vasculature and myocardium by establishing a regenerative extracellular matrixECMenvironment and chemotactic signals necessary for recruitment and differentiation of endogenous stem progenitor cellsThis approach combines multiple functional domains proven to act independentlythat are specifically delivered to ischemic myocardium by antibody targetingThis approach has several advantagesincluding intravenous delivery of a protein therapeuticand the ability to dose both immediately after reperfusion as well as periodically thereafter to maintain therapeutic efficacy over the course of recoverySuccess in phaseof the project will identify a clinical candidate for further developmentPhasewill focus on the production of clinical grade material and preclinical studies to support filing of an IND for a clinical trial in patients with acute myocardial infarctionPROJECT NARRATIVEMultifunctional antibody therapy for acute myocardial infarction Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed countriesAcute myocardial infarctionAMIaffectsmillion people worldwidewith a large number suffering from heart failureTo goal of this project is to develop a novel antibody based therapy that will significantly enhance the recovery of heart function early after AMI and thereby greatly reduce the level of mortality while improving quality of life of affected patients
