Research abstract

The Air Force frequently integrates complex new systems, such as innovative sensors, into larger systems of systems (SoS), such as aircraft platforms.Increasing system complexity can cause late discovery of integration issues that delay project completion and inflate costs. We propose to develop a system for Modeling with Augmented SysML to Track Evaluable Requirements for SoS (MASTERS). MASTERS will help the Air Force discover integration issues earlier by enabling the practical and widespread use of formal verification of subsystems and interfaces. In Phase II, we will build on our substantial Phase I progress towards identifying and demonstrating ways to ease specification of formally verifiable system interfaces. We are pursuing five innovations: (1) extending SysML to capture the meaning of requirements; (2) automatically building pieces of SysML models based on such elaborated requirements; (3) using extended SysML Models to generate AADL models with AGREE annexes in order to support compositional verification; (4) speeding system specification by extending reference architecture requirements and models in semantically consistent ways; (5) integrating with collaboration tools to lower the costs of eliciting missing specifications for legacy SoS integration targets.Phase I results strongly support our approach for improving the efficiency of SoS development and integration.
