Research abstract
Stottler Henke Associates, Inc. proposes the development of Cognitive Learning for Advanced Information Reporting (CLAIR), a groundbreaking AI-driven system designed to revolutionize the generation of quick-look reports for Undersea Warfare (USW) testing. The current reliance on manual processes for USW test analysis introduces significant challenges, including inconsistencies between reports, substantial delays in generating actionable insights, increased probability of human error, and limited scalability to meet the growing demands of modern USW systems. CLAIR directly addresses these critical limitations by leveraging an innovative Meta-Cognitive Deep Learning Framework. This sophisticated framework integrates three core components: (1) Multi-Modal Sensor Data Fusion and Embedding, which employs Contrastive Learning techniques to create a unified, semantically rich representation of diverse data streams, including acoustic and environmental sensor data, test procedures, equipment configurations, and observational notes; (2) AI-Powered Quality Assurance, utilizing Graph Neural Networks to perform comprehensive pre-test configuration checks, automatically identifying potential hardware inconsistencies, setup issues, and defects before tests commence; and (3) Intelligent Report Generation, powered by a fine-tuned Large Language Model (LLM) enhanced with a novel Meta-Cognitive Feedback Loop. This unique feedback loop enables the system to engage in self-critique, iteratively refine interpretations based on simulated expert feedback, and proactively seek clarification from users when faced with data ambiguity or missing information, thereby closely emulating the analytical capabilities of expert human analysts.CLAIR is meticulously designed with a user-friendly interface, ensuring seamless interaction between test engineers and the AI. The system's architecture emphasizes configurability and extensibility, allowing it to adapt to a wide range of USW test scenarios, sensor arrays, and evolving reporting requirements. Phase I of this project will focus on demonstrating the feasibility of this novel approach through rigorous modeling, simulation, and preliminary testing using representative USW datasets. The successful development and implementation of CLAIR will significantly enhance the efficiency, accuracy, reliability, and scalability of USW testing, ultimately bolstering the operational readiness and technological superiority of the U.S. Navy. Furthermore, the modular design of CLAIR enables its extensibility to different test procedures and domains, paving the way for broader applications beyond the scope of this initial project.
