Research abstract

In our Phase I effort, we determined the feasibility of a pocket-sized surface flotation device by making advancements in terms of design, materials and inflation. Various prototypes were designed and constructed in order to explore a number of configurations and to evaluate issues such as inflated as well as packaged sizes, buoyancy distribution and boarding. In this Phase II effort, we will advance on the progress made in Phase I in order to create the optimal design that is lightweight, wearable, pocket-sized and easy to deploy and board. Initially, we will focus on developing our innovative inflation system. As we move forward in the Phase II effort, through continuous improvements, we will combine this new inflation technology with a refined design and advanced materials to create a cohesive prototype. Developing, demonstrating and validating this prototype in Phase II will provide the groundwork for commercialization of the product in both the military and private sector in Phase III.
