Research abstract

In our Phase I and Phase II efforts, we determined the feasibility of a pocket-sized surface flotation device by making advancements in terms of design, materials and inflation. Various prototypes were designed and constructed in order to explore a number of configurations and to evaluate issues such as inflated as well as packaged sizes, buoyancy distribution and boarding. In this Phase II.5 effort, we will advance on the progress made in Phase I and Phase II in order to create the optimal design that is lightweight, wearable, pocket-sized and easy to deploy and board. As we move forward in the Phase II.5 effort, through continuous improvements, we will combine our new inflation technology with a refined design and advanced materials to create qualification prototypes. Developing, demonstrating and qualifying this raft in our Phase II.5 will provide the groundwork for commercialization of the product in both the military and private sector in Phase III.
