Research abstract

As technological complexity increases, so too does the cost of integrating new systems. Each innovation yields geometrically more interfaces with which to integrate. Unless we develop a better approach, it becomes cost prohibitive to integrate additional technologies and capabilities. Current integration approaches seek to address this complexity through managed commonality and shared infrastructure. While this approach works for a distributed application, it fails when applied to the system-of-systems integration problem. This research extends our established sematic model capabilities with the ability to generate configured, extensible integration software. This generated framework will seamlessly enable integration of disparate systems, with minimal manual effort. Where needed for performance, the generated infrastructure can leverage aspects of system homogeneity – but it is not required. Rather than a monolithic integration library, our infrastructure is based on a small set of modular operation primitives with the integration compiler assembling and optimizing the integration logic. This process, scales regardless of the number of systems, interfaces, messages, or protocols. The result of this research will be a semantic-based model driven integration capability that fundamentally solves the disparate system integration challenges (security, performance, redundancy, flexibility, extensibility) that plague todays’ systems-of systems integration efforts.
