Research abstract

While integration scalability and flexibility within complex System of Systems is required, the ability to test and validate software incrementally, and against systems and interactions that were not anticipated when the software was originally conceived is paramount to cost-effective deployment of new software-derived capabilities. We are at a point where manual, human-powered cognition of our large systems is too hard. Rather than hide complexity, this effort brings scalable math-based mechanisms to bear on the testing of complex cyber-physical systems. This proposal leverages Skayl’s first generation sematic-aware integration compiler, and seeks to research, test and quantify further developments to this technology including testing techniques for real-time signal and state management. This innovation will provide a more efficient and more cost-effective integration and validation solution that can be dynamically reconfigured as requirements, systems, and interfaces (and even as real-time operational conditions) change. This research identifies fundamental concepts relating to signals, state and behavior as related to the needs of cyber-physical systems and the formal methods needed to document them in models. These models are extended with metrics & approaches for testing real-time integrated systems, providing quantitative results to increase efficiency of the deployed software as well as identifying areas for further optimizations.
