Research abstract

Baker Engineering Inc. (BEI) will continue researching advanced technologies to improve Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) engine durability, wear resistance, and strength within critical internal engine components. BEIs expertise in advanced engine development will drive this program to obtain the best possible combination of performance and durability enhancements for UAV engines, while providing an unbiased evaluation of the materials and coatings. As an independent engine development company and engine integrator, BEI offers a unique combination of engine component engineering, sophisticated predictive analysis, engine testing capabilities, and understanding of the harsh demands of the operating environment. Specifically, BEI will research metal matrix composites and high performance alloys to improve the durability and performance of light-weight reciprocating components including pistons, connecting rods and crankshafts. Anti-friction, anti-coking, and thermal barrier coatings will be applied to pistons and cylinders for improved efficiency and performance. New bearing technologies will reduce lubrication requirements.Engines powering the ScanEagle and Shadow UAVs will serve as test beds for these advanced technologies. Goals for improving the 3W-28i ScanEagle engine include increasing durability from 250 to 1,000 hours, increasing performance from 2.16 to 2.60 Hp and increasing energy efficiency by 10%. A TRL 7 is anticipated for the upgraded engine.
