Research abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the feasibility of constructing a highly reliable, user reconfigurable, and user friendly Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) that can operate at cryogenic temperatures (< 20 K) under ultra-high vacuum. The overarching long term goal of this research is to improve the state of the art technology in IR sensor calibration. It is well recognized in the remote sensor calibration industry that FTS systems can be used as powerful tools for IR sensor diagnostics and high quality calibrations. However, current systems available for purchase are rather clumsy and difficult to adapt to specific test needs that are commonly encountered with sensor calibration. If the proposed commercially available, off-the-shelf (COTS) cryo-FTS is fully realized, FTS based IR sensor characterization will be much more widely used and the quality of remote sensor calibration will be enhanced throughout the industry. In addition, the COTS Cryo-FTS will greatly reduce the cost and test duration of infrared remote sensor characterization and calibration. If implemented at AEDC, the COTS FTS will set the Air Force space chamber test facility as the world leader in spectral characterization and calibration of infrared remote sensors.
