Research abstract

SJOS offers this proposal for the development of a Lightweight Infrared Search and Track (IRST) System for use on air-launched, air-recoverable platforms.SJOS infrared engineers are some of the best in the nation and L3 focal planes and product transitions are world class.SJOS has worked with L3 to develop several airborne IRST sensors in response to increased interest by the USAF and USN.In Phase I, SJOS and L3 provided trade studies, performance modeling, cost analysis, and candidate architectures to result in the highest performing, lowest cost, smallest size-weight-power IRST System design. In Phase II, we will provide a dual band, lightweight, IRST sensor prototype for data collection and algorithm development. The sensor will provide hard body and plume detection, while remaining lightweight.SJOS will integrate this dual-band sensor with dual-band optics and provide limited algorithm development and integration. The military potential is significant with the proliferation of UAVs.The USAF and USN are both rapidly developing the next generation UAVs, and IRST is a desired function. The commercial potential for this technology is extremely strong with UAV proliferation. For example, FedEx and other carriers use of unmanned cargo aircraft will require aircraft detection systems for collision avoidance.
