Research abstract

Time-varying electric fields can be used to manipulate the behavior of biological cells. Common applications include electroporation for delivery of pharmaceutical compounds or genetic material, inhibition of cell migration and adhesion, and cell apoptosis. Recently, the application of nanosecond pulsed electric fields has been observed to produce interesting biological effects that are useful for a variety of therapies. Researchers using pulsed electric fields need to accurately measure the temporal, spatial, and amplitude characteristics of the field delivered to the cells under study.Nanohmics is developing nano-imprinted arrays of field-effect transistors that will perform in-situ sub-cellular spatially-resolved and temporally-resolved electric field dosimetry. The electric field measurement array devices will be optimized for use in applications requiring trans-illumination and transparent substrates for microscopy of the cellular response.
