Research abstract

Instantaneous volumetric fluid imaging is crucial to high-speed aerodynamic development and testing. Rapid three-dimensional (3D) measurement of fluid density enables accurate capture of dynamic flow phenomena for validation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in wind tunnels. Nanohmics, Inc., teaming with the University of Texas (UT) Flowfield Imaging Laboratory, has developed the first-ever modular plenoptic fluid imaging system to measure a time sequence of fluid density throughout a 3D test volume seeded for laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). During the proposed Phase II program, the Nanohmics/UT team will develop a rugged, high-performance, 3D fluid density imaging prototype with increased speed, sensitivity and fidelity, with a technology readiness level goal of TRL 6-7. The team will fabricate a plenoptic camera prototype and aggressively test it in wind tunnels. The prototype imaging system will be ready for transition to and testing in an Air Force/Government testing facility during Phase III. The proposed Modular Plenoptic Adapter will convert a standard high-performance camera into a 3D plenoptic camera. This modular approach leverages COTS camera components already in most wind tunnel equipment inventories, providing a direct path to increased measurement utility in wind tunnel facilities and a rapid route to commercialization.
