Research abstract

The Hardened Intersite Cable System (HICS) provides the backbone for communications within Minutemen III missile complexes. HICS allows every Launch Control Center to command, control, and monitor every Launch Facility in its squadron. This multi-phase SBIR effort seeks to modernize intra-squadron communications with a wireless Weapon System Command and Control (WSC2) capability. A wireless WSC2 system would not face the same sustainment issues as the aging HICS system (e.g., damaged cable repair) and could also provide surface voice and data communications across the missile complex. In Phase I, we demonstrated the feasibility of deploying survivable, secure, and dependable wireless WSC2 systems at Malmstrom, Minot, and F. E. Warren Air Force Bases. In Phase II, we will develop, demonstrate, and deliver a high-fidelity software model of our mesh network architecture. The Phase II program features four biannual customer demonstrations, during which increasingly sophisticated system capabilities will be simulated for the Air Force. At the final demonstration, we will show our dual-mode architecture operating effectively across the spectrum of combat.
